All right! First bird of the day, and I’ve only shot eight times!
I’m staying here in Biggs, Oregon tonight getting ready to hunt the lower John Day and Deschutes for the next few days. This has not historically been a real productive area for chukars (at least not since the 1970s) but it’s close to the Willamette Valley and for those of us not lucky enough to live in the High Desert we take what we can get. In this case, it works out well for me because I run into Portland on Friday night and bring my grand kids out to hunt with me on Saturday.
I have a possibility of a friend joining me on Friday, but chances are I’ll be hunting alone for the first two days. I’ve been making an effort to invite people to come along more than usual because my wife is becoming more and more adamant, but the truth is, I like hunting alone a lot. Without the need to keep someone else happy I can wander wherever I want and at any speed. I seem to see a lot more when I’m alone. I rarely start talking to myself until after the fifth day.
